The World Palm Portraits Photography Competition (WPPPC) has worked with several experts in different fields of photography as judges, and it would not be possible to choose the deserving winners without our honourable judging panel that has decades of experience.

As for this year’s competition, the judging process will take place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we are proud to introduce the new judges that will be evaluating the entries based on the 6 themes.

BELVINDER SRON

Head Judge

As the Deputy CEO of Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and a Director of its Promotions & Communication Division, with over 27 years of experience in the palm oil industry, Belvinder constantly initiates impactful programmes involving among others, strategic communication
with stakeholders, and intensive promotion for mass consumers.

World Palm Portraits Photography Competition has always elicited enormous public interest with special focus on palm oil. It is the gateway to a positive impression on the palm oil industry through beautiful images that capture the grit of small farmers, the serenity of oil
palm farmlands, the biodiversity in plantations, and the versatility of the golden oil.

With vast experience in the industry and a discerning eye for details, that earn her rightful
position as the head of the judges, she balances the needs between aesthetics and reality.
The ability to appreciate images that have captured the essence of palm oil, the people, and
the industry, is very much needed when going through thousands of powerful photographs.

Shamshahrin Shamsudin

Main Judge

With his education background in photography from UiTM, Shah Alam Malaysia, Shamshahrin joined the STAR as a staff photographer until 1999. Later on, he became the photographer for a French newswire agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP) . 

His works have been published in local and foreign newspapers and magazines such as Life magazine’s website (photo of the day), IHT, Time, Asiaweek, Far Eastern Economic Re- view, The Star-Ledger (NY), etc. Conducted and shared his knowledge with several local universities like University Technology Malaysia (UTM – SPACE), International Islamic University (IIUM), Open University (OUM) and University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF). 

He was also Invited as an External Assessors for a photography module for Ministry of Human Resource (HR). The Ministry of Education has also appointed him to be the panel member of assessors for the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) while the Malaysian Creative Content Industry Guild (CCIG), named him as a panel member of Photography Accreditation. Between 2004 to 2017, Shamshahrin had worked with the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) in Kuala Lumpur, became a yearly mentor for Kinabalu Photo Festival, assisted Dr Shahidul Alam, a member of Board of Advisor for National Geographic & MAGNUM Agency for his Photojournalism Masterclass in Kuala Lumpur. 

Shamshahrin’s artwork exhibitions were shown to public since 1994 at various photography exhibitions such as Photography As An Art 1994 in Kuala Lumpur, `Conjunction Points’ Asian Photography, and Film Exhibition 2005, Gwangju, Korea, `Close Encounter’ Photo Exhibition 2010, Jeju Museum of Arts, Korea, and MPPA News Photographers Exhibition, MATIC KL

Che’ Ahmad Azhar

Main Judge

A specialist at the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University, Cyberjaya, Selangor, Malaysia. He is also a pioneer member of the faculty, and has taught in the field of visual communication, photography and drawing for more than twenty years. Known as Che’ Mad among his students and peers, his work has been featured in the Invisible Photographer Asia (IPA), LENS Blog, The New York Times, and Angkor Photo Festival. His solo exhibitions and projections were held in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Thailand, and Australia.

He is frequently invited as a judge, guest speaker, and facilitator for international and local photography competitions and workshops.

Che’ Ahmad Azhar holds a Master of Fine Arts and Technology from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and is a Professional Member of Creative Content Industry Guild Malaysia

Bazuki Muhammad

Guest Judge

This local chap was an architect graduate and an alumnus of College of Design, School of Architecture, Louisiana State University, USA. He used to spend 10 years in Louisiana and Tennessee, experimenting with his “Thinking Eyes” before shooting for the London-based news agency Reuters for 17 years, in Kuala Lumpur. He covered assignments with Reuters, and for publications in the United States, and Malaysia for 25 years.

Bazuki had covered the London Olympics, cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, United States President Bush in Japan, the war in Afghanistan, tsunami in Thailand, Hajj in Mecca, and Thailand’s political turmoil. Check out his works at www.bazuki.com

A highly experienced professional photographer who has worked on commercial, travel, industry, service, and corporate photography – both indoor and outdoor. His decades of challenging work experience extends from Los Angeles to Papua New Guinea. He enjoys his academic endeavour of giving talks and photography workshops at educational institutions, involving in art exhibitions and contributing creative work for books and other literatures, on the subject of photography.

Ulet Ifansasti

Guest Judge

Ulet Ifansasti graduated from University of Trisakti, Jakarta, majoring in Art and Graphic Design in 2001. He is a photojournalist and documentary photographer, with an interest in social environmental and cultural issues. Born in Papua,  Manokwari on October 24, 1983, and currently based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Ulet joined the international photo agency Getty Images in 2008 and has been a regular contributor and stringer since. As a freelance photographer, he is currently working on assignments for editorial and commercial clients and remains committed to exploring personal projects.

His works have been published in many leading publications including National Geographic, GREENPEACE, World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, STERN, The Guardian, TIME Magazine, USA Today, LIFE, National Geographic Traveler,  etc. Since 2013, Ulet received 6 awards from Istanbul Photo Awards, Getty Images APAC News, China International Press Photo, and the Indonesian Photojournalist Award

Ahmad ‘deNy’ Salman

Trained and certified by WorldPress Photo Foundation, Deny has more than fifteen years of experience as a trainer/coach in photography. He specialises in teaching photo story and visual literacy in various workshops, from local to international level. Among those are Permata Photojournalist Grants, and Kinabalu Photo Festival.

Deny works mainly on photo exhibitions and photography books. Started his career in early 2000, he joined djakarta! – the city life magazine, and then Jiwa Foto Agency for several years, before deciding to focus his career on photobook editing, including Edy Poernomo’s PASSING, Ng Swan Ti’s ILLUSION and Mamuk Ismuntoro’s Tanah Yang. ‘Vivere: dare to Live’ – Mamuk Ismuntoro’s solo exhibition in 2008 at Mamipo, Malang, was his first curatorial work, followed by many more photo exhibitions. In 2014, together with Lans Brahmantyo & Kurniadi Widodo, he curated his first photobook exhibition: Germany, Japan & Indonesia PhotoBooks. During his temporary stay in Melbourne, Australia, he presented an exposition about ‘Contemporary Indonesian Photography’ at Photography Studies College (PSC), 2015. He is a member of Jakarta International Photo Festival (JIPFest) 2019 curators’ team.
